About Seniors
The England Women’s Lacrosse Squad are the current bronze medallists and are ranked third in the world! The next World Cup is in June 2009 in the beautiful City of Prague in the Czech Republic. For the four years in between World Cups England have continued with their preparations to become even better equipped to defend their current position and to then challenge for the highest accolade of full World Cup glory and gold!
The Senior England Women’s Lacrosse Squad consists of approximately seventy players who range in age and experience. Attendance at the squad is by invitation only from the Selection Committee. Players can be seen at any time throughout the year by members of this committee on tours, at tournaments, such as the Home Internationals, as well as at Club League Fixtures. Young players can be fast tracked from National Centex also.
Within the last year this large Squad has been further split into two groups, namely the Performance Elite Squad and the Potential Squad. These squads still train together at the regular squads in September, November and January and players from both are invited to Home International trials in April.
Players in the Performance Elite Squad are expected to have reached a consistently high playing standard and be capable of being a regular member of the senior national side. The Potential Squad consists of players who are recognised as having the potential to play for England. There are currently fifteen members of the Performance Squad; each one of them is expected to show even greater commitment to their training, both in time and energy, and to show a resilience and mental toughness becoming of their elevated position!
Regular ‘Elite’ training also happens weekly on Tuesday evenings at the Rickmansworth Masonic Princess Marina Sports Centre, in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire. Players travel from all over the country to this training, including individuals from Exeter, Loughborough, Manchester and Birmingham.
Finally, the senior players, as members of the current England Squad, are extremely fortunate as they are afforded wonderful playing opportunities that allow them to build upon their own experience by playing competitive lacrosse at the toughest level. They are part of an extremely forward thinking and dynamic national programme. Currently, the squad are embarking on regular trips to the USA to play the top American Collegiate sides including universities such as Johns Hopkins, Duke, Maryland, Georgetown and Virginia. Indeed, on their next tour to the USA, England will be playing a practice game against the US Elite Squad and a tournament game against the Canadian Squad! In the summer of 2008 England will also participate in the European Cup in Lahti, Finland, and hope to play the US Squad in a Test Match Series in England before they visit Prague a few months earlier.
