Women’s Lacrosse Archive Details Put Online

Details of the Levick-Boyd archive on women’s lacrosse, cataloguing over 100 years of the game, have been put online for the first time.

The All England Women’s Lacrosse Association (AEWLA) Archive is dedicated to documenting everything women’s lacrosse-related, from tournament schedules and international match results to game regulations and financial records and a detailed listing of these archives can now be viewed online.

Archive curator, Karen Davies, says the aim of putting the details of the archive online is to allow people to understand where women’s lacrosse has come from over the past century and learn how the game has changed.

The collection is housed at the University of Bedfordshire in their Special Collections and it is hoped that putting the details of what’s in the archive online can ‘further knowledge and understanding for the game of women’s lacrosse through assembling and preserving a comprehensive record of its development’.

In the archive are also pictures of various tournaments from as early as 1935 as well as detailed documents regarding the regulation of women’s lacrosse, including a constitution dating back to 1962 and a list of game rules and from 1974.

Personal papers of former lacrosse players Jean Russell McFarlane and June Preston, which document their lacrosse-playing lives from 1929 until 1962 and include press cuttings, programmes, and photographs from their playing days, can also be accessed.

Personal papers relating to players such as Celia Brackenbridge and Elizabeth Carling will be added in due course as well as the details of visual recordings like reel-to-reel films and video tapes.

Also, the exciting and interesting Audrey Levick Papers, which were transferred from the University of Birmingham in 2015, will be added to the Archives Hub over the next couple of months.

England overcome Wales to go 2-0 at U20 Men's European Championship

England ran out winners of what turned out to be a marathon contest against neighbours Wales in Game 2 of their U20 Euros campaign.

A 17-5 scoreline showed an emphatic win after a game that was extremely competitive for long periods before England’s quality and all-round consistency finally told.

The English lads got off to a fairly slow start and despite taking the lead through Danny Hilditch, found themselves 2-3 down after some sloppy defensive work allowing Wales to capitalise.

Josh Simpson-Pink was able to level the game up just before the ¼ time after a slick passing move, but it wasn’t until Q2 when England finally began to stamp their authority on the match.

Another for Hilditch, followed by a brace from Halliday, put England three goals up before the weather took hold and lightning in the area forced a 40-minute delay to proceedings.

When the game resumed, England continued where they left off, with Will Greaves extending the advantage before Ollie Allsop added another combined with a couple of top saves from Tom Teal to create a healthy 8-3 lead at the half.

However, after the break the concentration began to wain a little and despite an early quarter goal from Allsop, two goals from the Braddock pairing (Owain and Dylan) who formed a formidable duo for Wales closed the game to 9-5 and set off a few nerves of a comeback.

However, the lads regrouped, stepped up the intensity, and goals from Tom Frow and Danny Jones took the game away from Wales again making it 11-5.

However, soon the next stoppage in play was to come as an unfortunate accidental injury to Danny Hilditch ,who had been a big influence on the game up to that point, required lengthy treatment prompting another 35 minute delay at the end of Q3.

To their credit, England did extremely well to refocus after the injury and produced a clinical fourth quarter that gave the game an emphatic final scoreline.

Jones, Ed Loveland, Allsop (twice), Simpson-Pink and Halliday all added to England’s tally in a 6-0 shutout final quarter to put a gloss on the win finishing 17-5.

Tomorrow’s match-up against Germany (5.30pm UK Time), also 2-0, will now be crucial in deciding who tops the Pool and advances straight to the semi-finals, while the loser will have to play a quarter-final on Wednesday.

England win thrilling contest to tie up Summer Series

England came from behind late to beat the US/WPLL 11-10 and tie up the RPC Summer Series at 1-1 going into the final match of the series.

Jenny Simpson powered home the winning effort with just 00:18 on the clock to give England a deserved win in a thrilling contest that kept the crowds excited throughout.

England and the US/WPLL Select side will now go head to head in the crucial final match of the series on Sunday (9.45am start).

After losing the first game 4-11 on Friday night, England came out looking to make amends and raced into an early lead to dominate the early exchanges.

Goals from Claire Faram, Tilly Shires, Jenny Simpson and Chloe Chan, who scored a particularly eye-catching effort after a midfield interception, propelled the home side into an emphatic four-goal lead before the US/WPLL worked to cut the deficit to 4-2 at the 1/4 time.

In a match played in sweltering 30c+ conditions, both teams continued to play a fierce, high-intensity match that ebbed and flowed throughout; Alex Drewe and Faram both scoring to cancel out an Amanda Johansen goal and give England a 6-3 lead.

Although England extended their lead to 7-3 early in the third, the US/WPLL side who had been largely frustrated up to that point sparked into life, tallying four unanswered goal to eventually tie the game early in the fourth and flip the game on its head.

What then followed in the last 10 minutes was a pulsating back-and-forth contest that swung from team to team, as the sides traded efforts briefly seeing the US/WPLL lead for the first time before Emily Gray levelled at 10-10 with two minutes to play and both teams went in search of a winner.

The draw was an important factor all day long and crucially Camilla Hayes and Faram combined to win possession off the resulting draw and at the end of a long, probing possession Torz Anderson was able to pick out Simpson for a tremendous finish past Allie Dacar in goal and give England the important lead.

The US/WPLL did manage one final possession with 00:18 on the clock but a loose pass towards the crease trying to force a leveller saw the ball run free and the final whistle end what was a truly terrific game.

Strathblane Crowned National POP Lacrosse Champions

Strathblane Primary School saw off all the competition to be crowned winners of the 2019 National POP Lacrosse Championship in Sheffield.

Strathblane, from the outskirts of Glasgow, defeated Kingscourt from Hampshire 12-9 in a hard fought final after beating Honeywell Junior School and St Peter’s Primary School in their quarter-final and semi-final respectively.

The Scottish team were looking to improve on their semi-final place in last year’s Plate competition and they certainly did that by winning the main Championship title.

Last year’s champions, Hale Prep, from Altrincham, were looking for a sixth title in seven years but were unable to get past Kingscourt in their semi-final, losing 6-10.

21 teams in total travelled to Sheffield’s English Institute of Sport on Sunday 23 June for the National POP Championships after qualifying through their respective regional tournaments earlier in the year.

In the morning session, the teams competed in the pool stages with the aim of finishing in the top two in their pool to progress to the Trophy knockout stages.

Based on the teams’ pool stage rankings, the schools were then split into the main Trophy competition and Plate and Bowl competitions for the afternoon’s games.

Sparsholt Primary School, Winchester, who were quarter-finalists in last year’s Trophy competition, managed to bag themselves a trophy this time out, defeating St Gabriel’s RC Primary School 6-4 in the Plate final.

And the third trophy of the day went to St Hugh’s School who beat Lister Junior School 5-2 to be crowned Bowl champions 2019.

Congratulations to all the teams and their players at the Championships for making the National Finals.

Lacrosse Legend, Michelle Tumolo, to Host Special Coaching Clinic this Summer

STX Athlete and Team USA player, Michelle Tumolo, is set to host her own special lacrosse coaching clinic at St Swithun’s School, Winchester, this summer.

The two-hour event on Thursday 15 August will coincide with Tumolo coaching at the St Swithun’s Triple Arrow summer camp on 15 & 16 August.

Tumolo is one of the stars of the modern game and has been playing since 2005 when she was at high school in her home state of New Jersey.

The 29-year-old attacker graduated from high school with records for goals, assists, ground balls, and draw controls and was quickly snapped up by the Syracuse Orange lacrosse team while studying at Syracuse University.

It was during her three years playing for the Orange that Tumolo really came into her own, posting the highest ever single-season totals in points and assists for a first year student.

In 2012, she also became the first Syracuse Orange player to be awarded the National Attacker of the Year award by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA).

After graduating from Syracuse, and despite suffering a serious ligament injury in 2013, she was named in the US national team for the 2015-16 season where she continues to play, wearing the number 35.

Off the field, Tumolo has been a coach since 2013, spending two seasons at the University of Florida before returning to the Syracuse as assistant coach in 2015.

Since 2016, she has been a coach for the University of Oregon, specialising in coordinating their offense.

The St Swithun’s Triple Arrow summer camp is in partnership with England Lacrosse’s equipment supplier STX and is a unique opportunity to listen to one of the best lacrosse players in the world speak about her craft and offer insight and advice on developing your game.
