England Lacrosse Welcome

Hello and welcome to the online programme for the 2023 National Schools Lacrosse Championships.

We cannot express enough how pleased we are that the National Schools annual tournament is back in 2023 after such a successful event last year following the lengthy break due to the coronavirus pandemic.

This competition is undoubtedly the highlight of the school lacrosse year and something I always look forward to and last year was no exception as 52 schools from all over the country with around 200 teams and 2,500 young players embarked on Aldershot to battle it out to be the best in the UK.

Since the last National Schools competition in March 2022, it has been a busy period for us at England Lacrosse with three summer tournaments for our England national teams, yielding a gold medal (European Box Lacrosse Championship), a bronze medal (World Lacrosse Women’s World Championship), and a sixth place finish (World Lacrosse Men’s U21 World Championship).

In addition to those fantastic results, we were able to send an England women’s U20 team on a tour to Prague, Czech Republic, where they competed in, and eventually won, a special tournament featuring two England and two Czech Republic sides.

Those international events were on top of the already very busy domestic season, as well as the School Challenge Cup, Triple Arrow Camps, and The Fly.

All those competitions will be back in 2023 with The Fly, England’s national sixes league bringing together some of the best players in the UK, moving to Rosslyn Park RFC in London across three weekends (14 May, 21 May, 4 June) and welcoming spectators for the first time!

There’ll also be two more international tournaments this year with our England men’s team heading to SanDiego, California, USA, for the 2023 World Lacrosse Men’s Championship and our England women’s U20 team travelling back to Prague for their European Championship; We wish both our England Teams all the best and look forward to their success. HERE

After a rocky couple of years due to the pandemic, it was absolutely brilliant to see our regular lacrosse events back in full swing and I would just like to take this opportunity to thank every single one of you for helping to keep lacrosse going and travelling up and down the country to support your children.

Back to the 2023 National Schools Lacrosse Championships and we can’t wait to showcase some of the country’s best young talent and give the athletes involved a taste of the sort of high level competition many of them will become accustomed to as they continue their lacrosse journey throughout their school career and beyond.

We’re expecting over 3000 girls to play across the four days of National Schools and, from my point of view, this bodes well for the future of the England national set-up from the Talent Pathway right up to the senior squads.

So I’d like to say a huge thank you to the schools and in particular, the girls competing, who arrive here prepared and ready to play some excellent lacrosse and we’re all looking forward to another brilliant event.

I would finally like to thank, as always; the staff, parents, supporters, officials, and volunteers in attendance this year for the dedication and effort given to making this event the spectacle that it is each year.

Good luck to all of you!

After a hugely successful first two years, The Fly, the UK’s national six-a-side event showcasing lacrosse at the highest level, is back in 2023.

The Fly, utilising the high-speed and innovative sixes format, is a pioneering elite level competition featuring the proposed Olympic and Commonwealth version of the sport.

The Fly emphasises the speed of our sport, putting its unique qualities at the heart of the identity and in particular, epitomising the non-stop, high tempo nature of the sixes game.

Not only does The Fly represent the fast-paced feel of lacrosse, the name and bold symbol represents its aspirational nature in looking forward to the future, looking ahead to Olympic and Commonwealth aspirations for the sport, and looking at what can be possible when the sport is able to let Fly.

The striking orange colour of The Fly takes inspiration from the colour of our lacrosse goals; symbolising the feeling of our players and coaches all focused towards one common goal in achieving success.

The Fly has the needs and ambitions of its players at its core, allowing our elite athletes to pursue the sport at the highest level while also offering a vision for our youngest players to fulfil their dreams.

At the 2022 World Games, British Lacrosse will take to the field for the first time in a World Sixes Championship and The Fly provides the platform and profile for our top talent to express themselves playing the proposed Olympic and Commonwealth format.

If featured in the Commonwealth Games, the six-a-side format presents a fantastic opportunity for our England teams to play in a multi-sport event for the first time!

The Fly features side-by-side men’s and women’s competitions, giving our athletes absolute equality in profile and performance, bringing together the best players and coaches from across the sport.

The inaugural version of The Fly was a huge success with some of the UK’s top players and coaches taking part.

This year, the competition will be bigger and better than ever, taking place across the Jubilee bank holiday weekend in June and will once again welcome some of the best talent from the UK to battle it out to be the best.

And, if all that wasn’t exciting enough, our four teams (Forge, Swift, Hustle, and Rise) all have brand new identities for 2022 and it’s sure to be another massive event!
