New Rules - Women’s Field Lacrosse 2020/21

Frequently Asked Questions

As a result of free movement these questions have been asked:

Scenario 1- Where should the ball carriers restart position be if….

Scenario 2- Where should other players movement/ restart position allowed to be.

Question 1-

  1. After a whistle and signal to stop the clock for an injury/blood?

Scenario 1- This depends on whether there was a foul or not. If a foul, it would be spot of the foul. If no foul, it's spot of the ball or a throw. Defer to the rule 13.B depending on where the situation occurred.

Scenario 2- Players may move but give the person with the ball 1m of space, if it was a throw, players may move but keep 4m away from the players involved in the throw

  1. After a whistle and signal to stop the clock for a time out in possession?

Scenario 1- This would be spot of the ball. This would only be during a dead ball situation (time outs after goals would obviously start with a draw) so, restart would depend on whether a foul had occurred to cause the dead ball situation.

Scenario 2- Players may move but give the person with the ball 1m of space

  1. After a whistle and signal to stop the clock for a card?

Scenario 1-

  • Again, refer to rule 13.B but, nobody goes behind and everyone gives the player awarded the ball 4m. Whistle start.

  • Also, if it was after a goal, it would be a free position at the centre of the draw

Scenario 2-

  • Players may move but keep 4m from the player awarded the foul or

  • IF it was after a goal had been scored the centre moves 4m to the side and a maximum of 2 others allowed around the circle the rest behind the restraining lines until the whistle to restart the game.

  1. 4) After a whistle and signal to stop the clock for a stick check during play (by the umpire) or on a dead ball outside the 11m (by a player or umpire)?

Scenario 1-In this situation, if the stick is legal, opponents only need to give 1m from the player with the ball. Beyond 1m free movement. Whistle start. If the stick is illegal, change of possession, if warranted, and everyone else 4m off. Beyond 4m free movement. Whistle start.

Scenario 2-

  • If a minor foul free position results from the stick check, offender or her replacement 4m to the side everyone else keeps 4m away. (11m from goal circle / 2m on the pitch) All other Players may move

  • If it was after a goal, so a goal is disallowed, a free position at the centre line, opposing player 4m to the side.

There is nothing in the rulebook on this situation. However, since it is a free position, possession is established so, players do NOT have to abide by draw positioning, however, they do need to abide by the restraining line rule, which is always in effect. So, everyone must be 4m from the player with the ball at centre and neither team may exceed the 6 (off) or 7 (def) player RL rule.

If no foul results from the stick check play continues from the spot 1m of free space to the person with the ball.
