Semi Final spot secured with victory against Israel

England booked a place in the World Championship semi-finals after a comfortable 13-5 win over previously unbeaten Israel.

Olivia Hompe and Megan Whittle tallied five and four points respectively as they helped the team to the last four spot.

The two teams previously met in the 2019 Women’s European Championship final in Netanya, Israel with England coming out 10-7 winners but Israel came into the match with five wins out of five, including a Last 16 success over Mexico the day before.

However, England blew away the opposition early on scoring five in the first quarter and from then on always stayed well ahead.

Hompe and Liv Wimpenny were the architects early on, Hompe assisting two and scoring one outrageous goal where she jumped, turned and shot all while in the air taking the feed; with Wimpenny scoring twice to help England lead 5-1 at 1/4 time.

Nevertheless, Israel were dogged throughout and held England to a blank second quarter, though could only add one goal to their score for a 5-2 half.

England then turned it back on for the second-half as after another Hompe-Wimpenny combo goal, it was Megan Whittle’s turn to join the party.

She scored four goals including two free positions as the England lead slowly grew.

Torz Anderson and Hompe increased the lead through Q4, while the evening was rounded off perfectly with a final England goal from Laura Merrifield who scored at a fourth World Championships to make it 13-5 and seal the semi-final spot.

England will now face Canada in the semi-final on Thursday 7 July at 9pm EST/2am UK, after they beat Czech Republic 15-7.
