England Lacrosse Boys' Academy Update | February '23

England Lacrosse pop-up banner

England Lacrosse would like to issue the following update regarding our Boy’s Academy and the selection process attached to it.

In line with England Lacrosse’s ambition to enhance the talent pool underpinning the Senior Men’s Performance Programme, the U18 Boys’ Academy will form the pathway for players and coaches leading to the U20’s programme and potential selection to represent England at future European and World Championships.

Going forwards, players wishing to earn selection for major event squads will be assessed via ongoing observation and performance during scheduled academy and age group training camps which replaces the previous route of trial-based selection.

To support the progression of talent development within the Pathway, a recruitment process will take place in due course to appoint a men’s U20 coaching team to increase the training and development opportunities available to appropriate players.

Unbeaten London Knights defeat Steelheads to win inaugural SBL Winter Box League

The London Knights' team lift the Winter Box League trophy

London Knights defeated an impressive Steelheads side 8-7 to remain unbeaten and lift the inaugural Southern Box Lacrosse (SBL) Winter Box League trophy on Sunday.

After topping the group and reaching the final with aplomb, Ben Page-Laycock did what he always does and scored four for a dominant Knights’ side who staved off a late Steelheads comeback in the fourth quarter to be named the first ever SBL Winter Box League champions.

Steelheads’ star attacker, Louis Alhage, also got his name on the scoresheet four times but it wasn’t enough as his side fell to a second loss to Knights in the space of one month.

London Knights looked to be running away with the contest in the early stages as Silas Burke opened the scoring after cutting in from the right and scoring past the Steelheads goalie.

Two quick-fire and almost identical goals by Travis Payne and then Page-Laycock saw Knights take a deserved three goal lead before one of the goals of the tournament finally got Thundercats going.

Fiona MacLean showed great tenacity to win the ball in the attacking third before being received by Alhage some distance from goal who ripped it into the top corner with pinpoint accuracy.

Steelheads always looked to be chasing the game and after Page-Laycock hit two more goals either side of another Burke effort for Knights with just one reply from Alhage, they had it all to do.

Sam Perry started the comeback with a great driving run from near the halfway line before shrugging off a defender and firing home.

However, Will Walker was quick to reply for Knights to keep a four goal cushion after he took advantage of his side being a man-up.

A moment of good fortune then helped Ian Murray grab a fourth for Steelheads as the Knights goalie parried a shot into Murray’s path who was there to dink the ball into the back of the net.

With the game entering the final stages, Steelheads were looking stronger but it was Page-Laycock who hit another one for Knights after he was the quickest to react after a Stowe save left the ball trickling across the crease.

At this point at 8-4 down, Steelheads had nothing to lose and they started hitting Knights with wave after wave of attack.

Alhage kept up his scoring streak and grabbed another when he gathered the ball in the Knights crease after a good save from the goalie and scored with a diving shot into the empty net.

Then, Steelheads made Knights pay for being a man down when Perry received the ball in a pocket of space, set himself and scored from distance to give his side a real chance at 8-6 with just minutes to play.

Knights tried to continue attacking Steelheads as they had done previously in the game leaving them open at the back and Alhage punished them as he bombed forward and received the ball from goalie, Stowe, before being one on one with the Knights’ goal-keeper and scoring from just outside the crease.

In a one-goal game, and with seconds left to play, Steelheads had a brilliant chance to draw the game level but Perry fumbled the ball at the crucial moment and the officials blew the final whistle to give Knights the victory.

In the third place game, Jamie Powell helped Thundercats with a hat-trick as they managed to hold on to beat Heaton Hornets 11-10.

All the action from Finals Day at the SBL Winter Box League as well as the group stage games is available to watch on Lacrosse Live UK.

Knights and Steelheads reach first ever SBL Winter Box League final

London Knights and Steelheads will battle it out in next Sunday’s Southern Box Lacrosse (SBL) Winter Box League final after they overcame Thundercats and Heaton Hornets respectively in their final group stage games on Sunday.

London Knights defeated Thundercats 15-4 to complete the group stage with an unbeaten record, scoring 28 and conceding just 14, and finish top of the table while Steelheads put aside a determined Heaton Hornets side 16-12 to edge ahead of Thundercats and finish second.

England international Ben Page-Laycock scored seven as his London Knights side made light work of Thundercats in the opening match on game day 3.

Cai Jefferies managed to hit a brace for Thundercats, taking his total to an impressive 10 for the tournament but it wasn’t enough as his team slipped to a second defeat to finish in third place.

In the late game, England’s Dave Groves was a cut above the rest as he managed eight goals to inspire his Steelheads side to a narrow victory over Heaton Hornets and a place in the final and potential box lacrosse history.

Hornets fought valiantly with Ollie Allsop and Ming Trinh scoring three times each but they couldn’t stop their team from tasting defeat in all three group stage games and finishing fourth in the group.

They’ll now take on Thundercats in a battle for third place when the SBL Winter Box League concludes this Sunday (15 January) with the third place game followed by the hotly anticipated final.

He is a hugely revered and well-loved member of our lacrosse community and we all share our sympathies for David at this difficult time.

We would like to pass on our full support and strength to David, his wife, and family, wishing him all the best on his continuing recovery.

Knights continue unbeaten run at inaugural SBL Winter Box League

London Knights overcame a determined Steelheads side to remain unbeaten while Thundercats took down Heaton Hornets in the second round of fixtures at the inaugural Southern Box Lacrosse (SBL) Winter Box League on Sunday.

After an enthralling opening weekend that saw both games won by a single goal, the second round of SBL Winter Box League fixtures didn’t disappoint.

London Knights took on Steelheads in the late game of the day with both teams knowing that a win would see them top the group and put them in prime position for a place in the final in a couple of weeks’ time.

Steelheads, who defeated Thundercats in their previous fixture, started well, finding themselves a goal up early in the first quarter through Dave Groves.

But Knights’ quality shone through and two late goals ensured a 6-4 victory to put them top of the table after two wins in two games.

In the early game, Heaton Hornets played Thundercats with both teams looking for a first win in the league.

It was a frenetic and ferocious game that saw 23 goals including an incredible seven strikes from Thundercats attacker and European champion with England, Jamie Powell.

But despite Heaton Hornets’ best efforts and a hat-trick from Ollie Allsop, they fell in their second round fixture leaving them bottom of the table with one more set of group fixtures to go.

Heading into the final round of group fixtures on Sunday 8 January, all four teams can mathematically reach the top two and play in the final; you can watch those fixtures live as well as all other SBL Winter Box League games in full over on Lacrosse Live UK’s YouTube channel HERE.
