Nick Kehoe International to take place this weekend

The annual Nick Kehoe International tournament returns this weekend as nine teams in three divisions from around the British Isles battle it out to win the prestigious trophy.

With an odd number of teams this year, the format has changed from previous years with three conference divisions of three teams each for the Preliminary & Divisional rounds on Saturday resulting in two final fours, one for the Championship title and one for the Plate, on Sunday.

North West, Scotland Blue, and Wales Dragons make up Conference A, Eire, Scotland White, and South are in Conference B and Conference C contains English Unis, Midlands, and Yorkshire.

Wilmslow Lacrosse Club will once again host the tournament across their astro-turf and grass pitches and spectators are welcome.

The Nick Kehoe International has been running every year for 26 years aside from a two-year break due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The event is named after former President of Yorkshire, Sheffield Steelers player, and medic on several England tours, Nick Kehoe, who sadly passed away in the 1998.

In honour of Nick’s death, the lacrosse-playing regions moved the men's regional championships from single games based on full international rules to a weekend tournament; this was a change Nick was passionate about and as such the trophy was named after him.

Two wins and a loss for England in Prague at E-Box 2023

England started their life as European Box Lacrosse Champions with two wins and a loss in their three games at the annual E-Box Invitational in Prague, Czech Republic this weekend.

A huge 24-3 victory over Norway, in which captain Tom Roche scored his first international goal, was followed by a narrow 13-8 defeat to Germany, who England famously beat to win the European Championship last summer.

On the final day of the competition, England bounced back with a 14-5 win over Switzerland to send the travelling fans home happy.

A squad filled with 10 England debutants mixed with several European Champions and England stalwarts travelled to LCC Radotín in Prague for England’s first competitive matches since the victory over Germany in the 2022 European Championship final almost nine months ago.

And they started with intent defeating Norway in spectacular fashion with Ben Page-Laycock, who was injured for a large chunk of last summer’s Championship, showing his hunger grabbing five goals and Ben Buchanan and Dave Groves, both European Champions, hitting four each.

The day belonged to England captain Tom Roche, however, who hit his first goal in an England shirt at the 28th time of asking.

On day two, England came up against a Germany side who had something to prove and came into the game off the back of a demolition of Czech Republic on day one.

A tough start that saw Germany go 5-0 up after 11 minutes gave England everything to do in the remaining three quarters and despite their best efforts, including braces from Buchanan, Groves, and Elliot Leonard, they fell to a narrow defeat.

Day three was England’s chance to bounce back against a Switzerland side who finished sixth at the 2022 European Box Lacrosse Championship last year.

England started in a steady manner but their undoubted quality shone through and another blistering performance from Page-Laycock, who added another five goals to his tally, ensured a comfortable 14-5 victory.

Oxton, Cheadle, & Spencer take home top prizes at Northern & Southern Flags Festivals

Oxton, Cheadle, and Spencer Lacrosse Club’s came out on top in the respective Women’s Senior Northern, Men’s Senior Northern, and Senior SEMLA Flags Finals over the past two weekends.

Oxton overcame a tough Mellor side 14-10 to win the Women’s Senior Flags Final and Cheadle showed their quality by defeating Brooklands 10-6 in the Men’s Senior Flags Final at the Northern Flags Festival at Rochdale Lacrosse Club on Sunday.

Last weekend, a Spencer side full of England international quality beat Hampstead 13-9 to take home the SEMLA Senior Flags title.

Spencer also lifted the SEMLA Intermediate Flags title with their second team who were able to beat Reading, who squeezed through their semi-final against Bristol Bombers by a single goal, 11-3.

Completing the SEMLA Flags Festival was Exeter who defeated Stoke 14-7 in the Minor Flags Final.

With 13 finals over two days at Rochdale Lacrosse Club, the Northern Flags Festival is a huge event with finals taking place from under-12 right up to senior level across both the men’s and women’s formats of the game.

The big winners of the weekend were Heaton Mersey who swept up two titles, including the U12 Onondaga Cup and the U14 Centurion Cup.

Northern Flags Festival schedule announced

Cheadle will take on Brooklands in the Men’s Senior Flags Final at Rochdale Lacrosse Club on Sunday as part of the annual Northern Flags Festival.

Traditionally the event that closes the domestic season in the north of England, the Northern Flags Festival will see 13 cup finals across the two-day event featuring men’s and women’s teams from under-12 right up to senior level.

In the Women’s Senior Flags Final, Mellor will play Oxton at 1:30pm on Sunday for the chance to be crowned champions of the north.

Spectators are being welcomed to Rochdale Lacrosse Club on both days of the Festival with entry costing £8 for adults, £5 for OAPs, and £2 for juniors (age 12-16) with free entry for under 12s; there is a car park on site with a £2 charge and refreshments will be available from the clubhouse throughout the day.

Final squad for 2023 Men's World Championship announced

England Lacrosse is pleased to announce the final 23-player England men’s squad ahead of the 2023 World Lacrosse Men’s World Championship in San Diego, USA.

The coaching team have completed their evaluations following several training weekends throughout the year and have whittled their initial 46-strong group down to just 23 with two months to go until the tournament.

No fewer than nine players from the 2018 Championship squad that finished 5th in Israel return for 2023 with a strong defensive core retained, including both goalies Will Baxter and Hal Dwobeng, and four defencemen including Andrew Baxter who will play in his fourth World Championship.

Christian Scarpello also makes the squad again following his success with the Waterdogs in winning PLL Championship last year, while new recruit Sean Goldsmith is included on the back of a successful season at NCAA University of North Carolina.

There is also a fresh, youthfulness to the final 23, with five players from last year’s U21 World Championship present after impressing the coaching staff following their step up to the seniors.

Danny Hilditch top scored for England at the U21 Worlds, with Drew Bickerton, Daniel Jones, Daniel Madeley, Josh Poke all also making the step up from the squad that competed in Ireland.

 England open their World Championship campaign against Australia on 22 June, before games against Haudenosaunee (23 June), USA (25 June), and Canada (26 June) in an always tough Blue Division Pool.

 The 2023 World Championship will take place between 21 June and 1 July at San Diego State University and England will be looking to build on their impressive fifth place finish at the 2018 World Championship.

England to take on Norway, Switzerland, and Germany at E-Box 2023

England will take on Norway, Switzerland, and 2022 European Box Lacrosse Championship runners-up, Germany, at the seventh annual E-Box European Box Lacrosse Invitational this weekend.

The tournament, being held at the LCC Radotín outdoor arena in Prague, Czech Republic, marks England’s first competitive fixtures since they became European Box Lacrosse Champions in summer 2022.

England head into this competition looking to extend their six-game unbeaten run that saw them defeat Scotland, Ireland, Switzerland, Sweden, Czech Republic, and Germany on their route to gold in Hanover last year.

The selected 19-player England squad contains a mix of experience and up-and-coming talent with seven of the squad having taken part in the European Championship last year, including captain Tom Roche; 10 of the England squad will be making their full international debuts at E-Box 2023.

Running alongside the E-Box men’s tournament will be the second edition of the She-Box women’s competition, featuring a UK-based women’s box lacrosse team for the first time in the SBL Ravens.

Nominations open for BUCS Awards 2023

Nominations have opened for the 12 awards to be handed out at the 2023 British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) Awards.

The awards are designed to celebrate the very best of university sport over the 2022/23 season and nominations are open until Wednesday 26 April.

Awards up for grabs include the Special Recognition Award, Digital Engagement Award, Coach of the Year, Unsung Hero, Diversity and Inclusion Award, AD Munrow Award, Dan Porter Award, Sportsperson of the Year, Club of the Year, Team of the Year, Student Volunteer of the Year, and Participation Programme of the Year.

Lacrosse has appeared at the awards in previous years with England international, Tilly Shires, finishing as a runner-up for Sportswoman of the Year in 2020.

The awards nominations are only open to those people who currently work or study at university and have had an impact during this current 2022/23 season.

Canada box lacrosse star, Megan Kinna, to host coaching clinics this weekend

Canada box lacrosse star, Megan Kinna, will travel to Macclesfield and Oxford on Saturday and Sunday respectively to deliver two special women’s box lacrosse sessions ahead of next year’s proposed Women’s World Box Lacrosse Championship.

Both sessions cost £20 to attend and will take place from 1pm-4pm with the first session on Saturday 15 April at Macclesfield RUFC in the north of England followed by a second on Sunday 16 April at the Oxford Academy in the south.

Kinna will be delivering the sessions and giving interested women’s box players in England the opportunity to learn from her vast experience in the box format.

Having started playing lacrosse at the age of four, Kinna quickly became a valued player for Team British Columbia girls box lacrosse helping them to three box lacrosse national championship titles in a row (2012, 2013, 2014); during this time, Kinna also contributed to British Columbia’s 2012 national championship-winning field lacrosse side.

It was around this time, during her high school years, that Kinna began playing for the Maple Ridge Burrards where she played for 14 years including eight years in their boys box lacrosse team.

As she moved on to college, and following a gold medal win at the 2015 U19 Women’s World Lacrosse Championship, Kinna became an ever-present for Northwestern University where she started all their competitive games between 2017 and 2020 becoming a regular goal-scorer and earning herself a spot in the Canada senior team for the 2017 Women’s World Lacrosse Championship.

In that tournament, she played in all eight games, including the final defeat to USA, scoring six and creating five and she has since played in two more World Championships plus two World Games, most recently helping Canada to the gold medal at the 2022 World Games in Birmingham, Alabama, USA.

2023 Home Internationals series match schedule confirmed

England, Scotland, and Wales all head to Nottingham next weekend for the 2023 Home Internationals series competing across Saturday 15 & Sunday 16 April in the annual international fixtures.

Nottingham University’s Riverside Sports Complex is the venue for two days of elite international competition featuring all the Home Nations sides across senior and junior competitions.

The Home Internationals features men’s and women’s senior competitions, as well as junior women’s competitions at U21 and U18 age groups.

England are the defending champions in all competitions having completed a clean sweep at the 2022 edition in Edinburgh, and are gunning to retain their titles ahead of important international competitions for a number of our squads.

There are plenty of interesting narratives to play out across the competition with World and European events on the horizon; England Senior Men and other home nations men’s teams will be fine tuning their squads for this summer’s World Championship and looking to lay down some markers in terms of their preparations.

Similarly, with a Women’s Under 21 European Championship in July, England Junior Women’s programme, headed up by Vic Alexander, will be ramping up efforts with eyes on finalising squads for the tournament and continuing to develop style and tactics for the summer.

It will also be England Senior Women’s first full field international since their memorable bronze medal win at the Women’s World Championship last June, now under the leadership of new Head Coach Mike Molster.

England Lacrosse is searching for a number of committed and enthusiastic individuals to volunteer as part of Home Internationals 2023.

Taking place on 15 & 16 April 2023 at the University of Nottingham, Home Internationals brings together England, Scotland, and Wales teams across the men’s and women’s formats of lacrosse in one competition where they battle it out to be named the best.

Volunteering opportunities are available across both days (Saturday 15 & Sunday 16) with days beginning at 8:30am and concluding at 5pm.

Volunteers can agree to either or both of the days across Home Internationals with volunteers required to man the table to help with scoring etc.

Spencer to play Hampstead as SEMLA Flags Finals schedule announced

The South East Men’s Lacrosse Association (SEMLA) has announced the schedule for its 2023 Flags Finals with Hampstead taking on Spencer in the Senior Final on Saturday 15 April.

Taking place at Surrey Sports Park, after a late switch from Horsham Football Club, the day will also see Spencer 2 play Reading Wildcats in the Intermediate Final and Exeter University battle it out against City of Stoke in the Minor Final.

As well as the senior finals, the 2023 SEMLA Flags Finals day will also include a junior tournament that will run alongside the senior competition.

SEMLA is welcoming spectators to the event with the gates opening at 10:30am and snacks and drinks available from within the main building at Surrey Sports Park.

Entry for this year’s Flags Finals day is FREE with spectators being asked to make a donation to David Leach’s GoFundMe page and/or buy a ticket for Wavey’s Big Raffle with prizes such as a six-night stay for two on the Suffolk coast, a Stenaline return crossing to Ireland for two, an overnight stay for two at the Bridgewood Manor Hotel & Spa in Kent, and four tickets to Tony Christie live at The Concorde Club in Hampshire!

Based in Worth, West Sussex, Worth School is a Roman Catholic day and boarding school for pupils from the ages of 11-18.

The School is located within Worth Abbey, a Benedictine monastery, in 500 acres of Sussex countryside and until 2008 was exclusively a boys’ school.

Worth boasts a whole range of excellent sports facilities, including nine rugby and 12 football pitches, three cricket squares and a floodlit Astro pitch.

The School has its own golf course, floodlit netball and tennis courts (and access to indoor courts) and has recently opened an indoor golf facility with a simulator, state-of-the art launch monitor and analysis capabilities.

Nottingham & Nottingham Trent win Championship titles at BUCS Big Wednesday

The University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University ensured the National Championship titles stayed in their city as they overcame tough opposition to win the respective women’s and men’s competitions at the David Ross Sports Village on BUCS Big Wednesday.

In the women’s competition, Nottingham blew away the University of Exeter with a huge performance in the fourth quarter, including five goals from England’s Alex Cant, to claim an 11-6 victory to retain the Championship title they won last year.

While it was Nottingham Trent who flexed their muscles in the men’s Championship final who defeated huge rivals Nottingham in their own backyard, eventually coming away with an 8-5 win.

Earlier in the day, and in what proved to be a foreshadowing of the Championship final, Nottingham lifted the women’s National Trophy after a big 16-4 victory over Exeter.

And Newcastle ensured it was a difficult day for all the southern teams involved in BUCS Big Wednesday as they saw off a spirited and dogged Imperial College London side, winning 10-5 to lift the men’s National Trophy.
