England Lacrosse launches university lacrosse players survey

England Lacrosse is delighted to, once again, launch our bi-annual survey for all university lacrosse players designed to monitor and measure the personal well-being and social outcomes of lacrosse participants at university.

The survey will enable us to evidence the impact lacrosse participation has on students' well-being, mental health and future prospects.

The information provided by players who complete the survey will help England Lacrosse to understand the impact participating in lacrosse has on an individual’s well-being and social outcomes in the university environment and how we can adapt and develop the lacrosse offer at university to better serve the university lacrosse community.

BUCS Match of the Week | University of Liverpool v Newcastle University

This week’s BUCS Match of the Week sees us head to Merseyside as Liverpool take on Newcastle in a Women’s Premier North 2 match-up.

Liverpool come into this game with just one win from their seven games this season and their 12-7 win over Edinburgh 2s in early November sees them second bottom on three points.

They were dumped out of the National Trophy after a 19-2 second round defeat by fellow Premier North 2 team Durham 2 despite an impressive 12-3 round one victory over Nottingham 3s.

It’s certainly been a baptism of fire for a team who were promoted from the Northern Tier 1 – 1A last season with an unbeaten record and 10 league wins in a row.

Today, Liverpool will be looking to build upon a good performance last week as they fell to a narrow 9-7 defeat to Manchester and finally grab that second league win that has been so elusive over the past month.

Newcastle make the almost 350-mile round trip to Liverpool hoping to bounce back from successive defeats in all competitions for the second time this season.

Despite this, they sit in a healthy third place in the Premier North 2, level on points with Manchester who they are yet to play and blew away Liverpool 12-2 in the reverse fixture in October.

Three wins and three losses from six games is a good return for Newcastle and being “the best of the rest” behind two incredible sides in Durham 2s and Nottingham 2s is certainly not to be sniffed at and a second successive third place finish looks to be on the cards.

Ones to Watch

University of Liverpool

An exceptional performer throughout the season so far, Georgina Goodwin is a defensive midfielder whose performances across the pitch in both the attack and defence has had a huge impact on Liverpool’s game.

Zoe Hollingshead is a newcomer to the Liverpool team this season having only started her studies in September but she has already proved her worth in a short space of time.

Hollingshead has the ability to create space in the centre of midfield and control the attacking play brilliantly.

Newcastle University

Newcastle’s two players to watch come as a pair and are, in the words of coach Jeremy Pidgeon, a “deathly duo”.

Emma Eastwick-Jones and Henny Wright are both midfielders who are so in sync they can read each other’s play and predict what the other is going to do.

A part of the England under-23 set-up, Eastwick-Jones is an unbelievable talent who clearly has a bright future head of her on a lacrosse pitch.

Having come through the ranks at Timperley Lacrosse Club in Greater Manchester, Wright is continuing her development at Newcastle and is proving a tough nut to crack in the middle of the park.

BUCS Match of the Week | Nottingham Trent University v University of Birmingham

Our BUCS Match of the Week takes us to Nottingham this week as Nottingham Trent University take on the University of Birmingham in the Women’s Premier North 1 division.

Nottingham Trent come into this fixture sat in third place in the table narrowly behind Durham and Nottingham in first and second respectively.

They’ve had a mixed start to the season with three wins, three defeats, and a draw from their opening seven games and they are looking to get back to winning ways today after three games without victory, despite an enthralling 14-14 draw with Edinburgh last time out.

A close 12-9 victory in the reverse fixture will give Nottingham Trent some confidence heading into this one.

Birmingham are currently in fifth place in the league table, level on points with Loughborough who they beat 12-11 two weeks ago before tasting defeat in their last game against Durham.

They have a record of two wins and five losses so far this season and will be hoping to properly kick-start their campaign with a win against Nottingham Trent today.

Historically, this fixture has been a tight contest with both games last season won by one goal and this season’s encounter by three.

Ones to Watch

Nottingham Trent University

Nottingham Trent have a whole host of talent in their ranks for the 2023/24 season with several international players, including England’s Sofia Wise.

Fresh from helping the England under-20 team win the European Championship trophy in the summer, Wise is a threat on both sides of the ball.

Her speed and high-level stick skills carry the Nottingham Trent midfield and she currently leads the team stats in turnovers, interceptions, and ground-balls.

Another player who is part of the England set-up is Nottingham Trent’s top scorer Harley Tideswell.

Tideswell already has 10 years’ experience with a lacrosse stick after starting at Mellor Lacrosse Club at the age of 11 and she has grown into an agile attacker who uses her quick feet and stick control to find her way through the fan and defenders to grab vital goals for the team.

University of Birmingham

Birmingham aren’t short of an international player or two either and England’s Ellie Simpson is definitely one to watch this season.

Having started in the junior England teams, Simpson has recently progressed into the senior set-up where she has been continuing to progress with some speed!

A fierce defender, Simpson will play a huge part if Birmingham are to snatch a win later today.

A new addition to the first team for the 2023/24 season, Izzy O’Kelly has already proved her worth in the Birmingham team with her performances as both an attacking and defensive midfielder.

BUCS Match of the Week | University of Plymouth v University of the West of England

BUCS Match of the Week | University of Plymouth v University of the West of England

The BUCS Match of the Week takes us to the south-west coast this week as we focus on the University of Plymouth v the University of the West of England (UWE) in the Western Tier 1 - 1A.

Plymouth start the day in third place in the league after an impressive unbeaten start to the season that has seen them narrowly defeat Southampton 4-3 in their last match and take a 10-1 victory in the reverse fixture against UWE on the opening day.

Plymouth’s first two results are doubly impressive considering they are newly promoted to the Western Tier 1 - 1A after winning the Western Tier 2 - 2A last season.

It’s a 260-mile round trip for UWE to play Plymouth but they’ll be looking to kick-start their 2023/24 domestic campaign that has so far yielded just one win from their opening four games.

A win against Plymouth today would make it consecutive victories for the first time this season after a 3-2 away win over Bath 2s last Wednesday; they currently sit in fifth position in the league three points behind Plymouth.

After finishing fourth last season, UWE’s hopes for the season once again look to be maintaining their Western Tier 1 - 1A status.

Ones to Watch

University of Plymouth

After a hugely successful season last year that included promotion and a Western Conference Cup title, Plymouth are looking to continue their run of good form and their lead long-pole, Alex Webb, is integral if they are to do so.

An unstoppable defender who has been a part of the Plymouth side for a number of years now, Webb is physical in defence, willing to stop anyone from getting past him, and is a huge part of their transition game.

After stepping down as Plymouth captain at the end of last season, James Stansbury is back for the 2023/24 season to once again lead the Plymouth attack.

Stansbury is a fast-thinking, confident dodger who can find the back of the net with ease; defenders would be foolish to leave him open in front of goal!

University of the West of England

UWE’s Alfie Stanton is a towering presence in between the sticks for his side and, despite being a new addition to the team this season, has started with intent showing what he’s capable of in UWE’s last game against Bath 2s.

Another new addition to the UWE side for 2023/24, Theo Powell is a defender not to be messed with and again showed his defensive capabilities against Bath 2s last week.

UWE have had some tough fixtures so far this season but with Stanton and Powell continuing to improve week by week they’re sure to pick up some more positive results.

BUCS Match of the Week | University of Cambridge v University of Oxford

BUCS Match of the Week | University of Cambridge v University of Oxford

The BUCS Match of the Week sees us focus on the women’s Premier South 1 as the University of Cambridge take on their old rivals the University of Oxford later today, with both sides looking to highlight their title-challenging credentials.

One of the oldest rivalries in the world, Cambridge have been playing Oxford at lacrosse for at least 107 years and this year is no different as both sides look to get one up on the other early in the season.

Both teams have started the season strongly with Cambridge winning two (20-5 v UCL, 16-8 v Cardiff) and losing two (12-5 v Bristol, 22-4 v Exeter) of their opening four matches leaving them in fourth place in the league and one place behind Oxford on six points.

Oxford meanwhile are yet to taste defeat in the league so far this season with two wins (12-6 v UCL, 9-8 v Cardiff) and an enthralling 10-10 draw with Exeter; they currently sit in third place on seven points, just three points behind Exeter in top spot.

A win for either team at this point in the season would be significant as they look to give chase to early leaders Exeter and improve upon their second (Oxford) and third (Cambridge) place finishes from last season.

Ones to Watch

University of Cambridge

A veteran in the Cambridge side, Lily Mainwaring has all the attributes of an excellent lacrosse athlete with all the experience to go with it having learned her skills at Moreton Hall School before captaining Wales at under-19 level.

Mainwaring’s been playing matches against Oxford since 2019 and has played with some of the best in the business, including England’s Julie Wise and Scotland’s Sophie Tamblyn.

Another player to keep an eye on this week is another stalwart of the Cambridge team, Jasmine Ventham.

One of Cambridge’s captains up until this season, Ventham was a pupil at Wycombe Abbey School where she first began to hone her lacrosse game before heading to Cambridge to study in 2020; she’s got experience playing in the annual Super Counties competition and is no stranger to a match against Oxford!

University of Oxford

Tenacious midfielder Isla Finlay brings huge positive energy to the Oxford team and her hustle in the midfield and strength in creating opportunities in the attack are what make her one of the first names on the team-sheet.

Finlay’s ability to react quickly to game-specific scenarios and help her team-mates in all areas of the pitch mean that she’s definitely one to watch.

A new addition to the Oxford squad for the 2023/24 season, Tilly Pearse is a player that Oxford are really excited about and they believe she’s a player to keep an eye on this season and over the coming years.

A former pupil at Putney High School, Pearse’s goal-scoring abilities are clear to see and the improvement in her game since the season began has been incredible to watch.

BUCS Match of the Week | Lancaster University v University of Manchester

The BUCS Match of the Week sees us focus on the Men’s Northern Tier 1 - 1A clash between Lancaster University and University of Manchester.

Both teams come into this fixture off the back of differing results in round 1 of the National Trophy; Lancaster picked up their first win of the season as they defeated Durham 2s 9-4 while Manchester suffered a narrow 9-6 defeat to Nottingham Trent 2s which put an end to their National Trophy campaign for this year.

Manchester, who were promoted from the Northern Tier 2 - 2A as champions last season, have started well and currently sit in third place in the league with three points from their first two games; their only win a narrow but impressive 9-8 victory over their rivals from across the Pennines, Sheffield.

Lancaster have failed to win in the league so far this season after defeats to Sheffield (11-3) and Leeds (9-0) in their opening two games but are hoping their huge win over Durham 2s in the National Trophy last week will kick-start their campaign.

They hope to once again maintain their Northern Tier 1 - 1A status this season after a solid third place finish last year.

Ones to Watch

Lancaster University

A part of the Altrincham CofE Primary School’s 2012 National Schools Pop Lacrosse Tournament winning side, the first Altrincham team to win that prize, Ben Grime is one of the more experienced players in Lancaster’s squad; indeed he was the first team captain up until July this year when he completed his undergraduate degree only to return in September to begin his post-graduate studies.

Grime is a prolific goal scorer whose signature fake pass has confused many a defender over the years and he has scored five of Lancaster’s goals this season so far.

Having begun his studies at Lancaster University in 2022, Ben Hordern quickly became one of Lancaster’s most important players in the attack; he’s already stepped up another level this year scoring a hat-trick in Lancaster’s National Trophy win over Durham 2s last week.

University of Manchester

Led by experienced former England international, Tim Blower, as Head Coach, Manchester had an incredible season in 2022/23 where they went unbeaten in the league and claimed the Northern Tier 2 - 2A title in style with an overall goal difference of +63.

This season, in a new league, Manchester are hoping to make a statement in a higher division and with lightning-fast face-off man Freddie Goodrham in the attack you wouldn't bet against them.

Goodrham captained the Manchester side to promotion last season and, despite taking a slight step back this year, he is still one to keep an eye on as the 2023/24 season plays out.

A new recruit to the first team this season, defender James Boam is already a solid part of Manchester’s back line and can always be trusted to put in a big hit when required to stop the opposition from scoring.

BUCS Match of the Week | University of Sheffield v University of Warwick

The BUCS Match of the Week sees us head to Sheffield on Wednesday where the University of Sheffield take on the University of Warwick in the Women’s National Trophy Round 1.

Sheffield head into the first round of the National Trophy after playing just one game in the league so far this season which they narrowly lost 13-10 against Leeds Beckett three weeks ago.

That result leaves them in 5th place in the Northern Tier 1 but with the top four teams all tied on three points apiece, Sheffield are still in with a shout of mounting a title challenge.

Warwick have also only played one game in the league so far this season, a huge 32-4 win over Oxford Brookes 2nds in the Midlands Tier 1 - 1A.

That win sees them in a healthy third position in the league just behind Nottingham 3rds and Loughborough 2nds who have both played a game extra.

Having gained promotion from the Midlands Tier 2 - 2A last season, Warwick are also looking to challenge for the title and secure promotion to the Premier division.

Ones to Watch

University of Sheffield

After a fourth placed finish last season that left them just three points behind second place, Sheffield are hoping to make it to the Premier division this season with their mix of experience and youth.

Second year student Emily Kynastan is an experienced draw specialist whose draw success rate is enviable and her ability to take defenders on and beat them sees her as one of Sheffield’s top goal scorers.

A product of Mellor Lacrosse Club in Greater Manchester, Kynastan has been running developmental sessions at the University of Sheffield for people who are new to lacrosse since 2021.

A key member of the Sheffield defence is Violet Street who can also double up as a midfielder when required; she is a brilliant judge of the ball making her excellent at interceptions and has a particular penchant for one v one defence.

University of Warwick

Warwick are certainly a team on the up and with a promotion from the Midlands Tier 2 - 2A last season, they’ve got their sights firmly on securing promotion to the big time this year.

Goalie Ginny Zealley is one of the key players for Warwick in their quest to hit the big time and her experience in the England under-21 and Wales set-ups will prove important for her team.

Having learned and honed her skills at Wycombe Abbey School, Zealley is a strong goalie who is ready to take Warwick to the next level.

Another player who could prove pivotal to Warwick’s chances of promotion this season is Justine Sansom who is a part of the England under-20 set-up.

A natural athlete, Sansom also plays netball in the England Premier Division 2 with netball allowing her to play in multiple national club tournaments and explore England while playing for various Saracens Mavericks NPL teams.

Registration for England Lacrosse University Aspire Programme opens

Registration is now open for England Lacrosse’s brand new University Aspire Programme that aims to identify men’s athletes who are not currently a part of any England Lacrosse programmes but have the potential to progress into the England Lacrosse Perform Programme.

Three University Aspire Programme assessment days will take place across the country on Sunday 12 November (North Burnley College), Sunday 19 November (Loughborough University), and Sunday 26 November (Bath Lacrosse Club).

The assessment days will include speed and agility testing and up to four hours of lacrosse coaching from experienced coaches from within the men's performance programme.

Once an initial training group has been formed from those who have been assessed, the University Aspire Programme will meet to train four times per year between December and April/May.

The squad will be run in parallel with the England men’s national performance squad and will work towards the selection of a squad for an annual European tour starting in July 2024.

The cost of attending an assessment day is £20 and all players attending the days will receive an England Lacrosse shooting shirt.

BUCS Match of the Week | University of Oxford v Exeter University

BUCS Match of the Week | University of Oxford v Exeter University

The BUCS Match of the Week takes us to the Men’s Premier South league this week as the University of Oxford take on Exeter University.

Oxford come into this game looking to go three unbeaten and extend their lead at the top of the table after dominant wins over Bath (12-4) and Marjon (11-0) in their opening two matches.

Exeter, who sit third in the Premier South league table after two matches, have a record of one win and one loss so far after games against Bristol (8-9 defeat) and Cardiff (14-1 win).

Both teams will be looking to improve upon their league finishes from last season with Oxford finishing fourth and Exeter finishing just in front in third and, looking at both sides’ squads, they have more than enough to challenge for the league title.

Ones to Watch

University of Oxford

The University of Oxford have the undeniable talents of Jeongmyeong (Shine) Park for another year and he takes up the captaincy for the 2023/24 season as well as face-off duties.

Having played for the South Korea national side, Park offers international experience that can prove to be the difference between teams in the Premier South division.

Further adding to the University of Oxford’s talent and experience is Patrick Atkins who joins Oxford’s men’s side from Connecticut College in the US where he has been playing as an offensive midfielder in the NCAA Division 3.

An extremely exciting prospect, Atkins has already bagged an incredible 26 goals in the last four games he’s played for Oxford.

Exeter University

After an impressive third place finish in the league last season and a win in the SEMLA Minor tournament, Exeter will be looking to cement their spot in the upper echelons of the league this season.

They welcome attacker Fraser Cox to the first team for the 2023/24 season after impressing for the second team last year.

Cox is not afraid to dodge past defenders, whether long pole or short, and get a shot off on goal and Exeter will be hoping to see goals from this young player as he grows into the team.

Another attacking threat is Nat Hodgson who loves to create problems for defenders and goalies around the crease.

He warmed up sufficiently at last weekend’s BUCS Sixes competition where he helped his side to the semi-finals, an eventual third place finish, and three wins in their five games.

BUCS Match of the Week | University of Nottingham v Loughborough University

BUCS Match of the Week is back for the 2023/24 season with our first fixture taking us to the Women’s Premier North 1 league as the University of Nottingham take on Loughborough University.

Nottingham come into this fixture off the back of a huge away day win in the Nottingham derby last week where they beat Nottingham Trent University 11-3.

Loughborough also claimed victory in their opening away game of the season as they defeated Birmingham 11-9.

Nottingham currently sit second in the table after that opening day win with Loughborough right on their tail in third.

Last season’s BUCS Women’s Premier North 1 and BUCS National Championship champions, Nottingham will be looking to assert their dominance early this season with a statement win over Loughborough who themselves will be hoping to improve upon last season’s sixth place finish.

Ones to Watch

University of Nottingham

The University of Nottingham boasts an array of international talent including goalkeeper, Sienna Parekh, who takes on the permanent goalie role this season after Dylan Whittington’s graduation last year.

Parekh has turned a few heads after outstanding performances for Swift at The Fly 2023 and at the 2023 ELF Women’s U21 Championship in Prague, Czechia, where she helped England to become European champions.

Another player who helped England to U21 Euros glory is attacker, Charlie Bell, who takes up the role of Club Captain at Nottingham this year.

Bell learned her trade at Withington Girls’ School in Manchester before entering the England Lacrosse Talent Pathway where she has impressed over the past couple of years; she was also part of the Hustle team at The Fly 2023.

As well as younger players like Parekh and Bell, Nottingham have some experienced heads in their midst including returning fourth year students Emma Savage and Juliet Banks.

England international, Savage, has just returned from a hugely successful tour of North Carolina with England as they began their preparations ahead of the 2023 ELF Women’s Championship in Portugal next year.

She has been a stalwart at The Fly, representing Rise in 2022 and 2023, where she has scored 28 goals in just nine games and earned herself a spot in the 2023 All-Star Team.

Another player who has been in and around the England women’s team for the past few years is defender, Juliet Banks.

Having represented the England B team at the 2022 Home Internationals Series in Edinburgh, Scotland, Banks is back in the Nottingham ranks after deciding to continue her medical degree at the university.

Loughborough

After victory on the opening day, Loughborough will be looking to back that up with what would be an impressive win over Nottingham.

They’ll be helped along by several of their experienced players including captains and international players Hannah Khalique and Chloe Ferguson.

Khalique has been playing lacrosse to a high standard for a number of years, including while studying at Queen Anne’s School while Ferguson’s skills were honed at Bolton School before moving into the England Lacrosse Talent Pathway where she played for England under-21s at the 2022 Home Internationals Series.

For Loughborough, it’s not all about experience though as they’ve recruited some exciting up and coming talent ahead of the 2023/24 season.

Having come through the ranks at Benenden School, Isla Forbes is now continuing her lacrosse journey with Loughborough and adds an incredible burst of speed to the team.

Another new-comer, Annabel Noble joins the team after captaining the Moreton Hall first team while at school and being a part of both the England Lacrosse Talent Pathway and the Wales under-21 team.

An accomplished player despite her young age, Noble opened her goal-scoring account in last week’s opening game of the season where she fired home a hat-trick and Loughborough will be hoping she’s on form in Nottingham on Wednesday.

Registration opens for 2023 BUCS 6s tournament

The University of Nottingham celebrate victory at the 2022 BUCS 6s competition

Registration has opened for the annual BUCS 6s tournament taking place on Sunday 15 October 2023 at Nottingham Trent University.

Universities have until 11:59pm on Tuesday 19 September to register their teams with players able to join teams until 11:59pm on Tuesday 10 October.

The BUCS 6s competition has been a staple of the university lacrosse calendar for a number of years now and was held at the Coombe Dingle Sports Complex in Bristol between 2017 and 2021 when it moved to Nottingham Trent University.

In 2022, the University of Nottingham won both the men’s and women’s Championship titles while Cardiff University and Newcastle University took home the men’s and women’s Trophy titles respectively.

Traditionally an eight-a-side tournament, the format was changed in 2021 to fit in with the new sixes version of lacrosse.

Registered teams will be split into two competitions, the Championship and the Trophy, and seeded based on their position in the BUCS Lacrosse 2022-23 season.

Premiership universities’ first teams will be allocated to the Championship with any remaining spaces allocated to the next best finishing position; the remaining teams will be allocated to the Trophy along with any second or third teams.

Bumper day of lacrosse as BUCS Big Wednesday takes place tomorrow

BUCS Big Wednesday Men's Championship Final Graphic

British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) Big Wednesday returns tomorrow with four games of lacrosse across the men’s and women’s competitions in the battle to be crowned National Trophy and Championship winners.

Reigning champions Nottingham take on Exeter in the Women’s Championship final hoping that home advantage will see them retain their crown, while the Nottingham Men will be looking to make it a home double as they play city rivals Nottingham Trent in the Men’s Championship final.

Exeter and Nottingham also meet in the Women’s Trophy final as their 2s teams meet, while Newcastle are also out to retain their title, battling it out against Imperial College London in the Men’s Trophy, which they won last year.

Taking place at the David Ross Sports Village at the University of Nottingham, BUCS Big Wednesday is the culmination of the domestic university cup competitions that started back in January and saw 94 lacrosse teams from around the UK whittled down to just eight finalists.

Seven of the eight finalists featuring at this year’s BUCS Big Wednesday finished top of their league at the end of the 2022-23 season with only Nottingham Trent Men finishing second behind fellow Championship finalists Nottingham.

Each team has proved difficult to beat over the course of the season with five teams (Nottingham Men 1s, Nottingham Women 1s, Newcastle Men 1s, Exeter Women 2s, Nottingham Women 2s) winning all ten of their league fixtures to remain undefeated.

And there’s plenty of international interest in the squads too with over 15 England national team players and coaches involved across the eight squads, including the likes of Dylan Whittington and Emma Savage (Nottingham) Alice Ripper and Anna Neville (Exeter), Josh Poke and Will Shirt (Trent), Ed Loveland and Daniel Madeley (Nottingham) and England senior women’s Head Coach Michael Molster in charge of Exeter.

Both Championship finals will be streamed live on BUCS TV this year with the women’s final starting at 4:30pm and the men’s final facing off at 7pm.

If you are unable to watch the games live, England Lacrosse will be providing updates across social media.

England Lacrosse launches university lacrosse players survey

The men's team from Exeter University huddle at half-time

England Lacrosse is delighted to, once again, launch our bi-annual survey for all university lacrosse players designed to monitor and measure the personal well-being and social outcomes of lacrosse participants at university.

The survey will enable us to evidence the impact lacrosse participation has on students' well-being, mental health and future prospects.

The information provided by players who complete the survey will help England Lacrosse to understand the impact participating in lacrosse has on an individual’s well-being and social outcomes in the university environment and how we can adapt and develop the lacrosse offer at university to better serve the university lacrosse community.

England Lacrosse Launches University Lacrosse Survey

England Lacrosse is delighted to launch the University Lacrosse Survey aimed at helping lacrosse-playing students and institutions over the next few years.

As we continue to look at ways to support university lacrosse during the 2021/22 season and beyond, we are reaching out to any students who play lacrosse in England and Wales to aid our decision making.

The survey focuses specifically on lacrosse as well as COVID-19 and its impact on physical activity as it relates to students and the university sector in general.

The answers to the survey will help us in planning our next steps for university lacrosse in England and Wales and will allow us to be in the best position possible to help the university sector going forward.

Please note, the survey will close on Sunday 14 November.

Southampton University Ladies Lacrosse Club Gears up for Return to Play

SULLC.jpg

The lacrosse community rejoiced this week as grassroots lacrosse was able to return to play in an adapted manner for the first time in 2021.

People up and down the country have been leaving their homes and stepping back onto the pitch to play some of the sport they love and the players at Southampton University Ladies Lacrosse Club are certainly no different.

We spoke to Southampton University Ladies President, Olivia Turner, just before the return to play about restarting lacrosse and she said she, and the rest of the club, simply cannot wait to get back out playing!

“The most exciting thing we are looking forward to is getting back to lacrosse!

“We’ve all missed it so much so we definitely can’t wait for training, socials and getting to see everyone’s friendly faces again!”

On the whole, it’s been a tough year for the club but they have managed to keep their members engaged, mainly through online means.

“During this last lockdown, we have had a variety of activities to keep our members engaged; the main ones being online socials and encouraging our girls with their lacrosse skills, whether it be going for a throw about with another club member, or putting out a wall-ball routine.

“We’ve also hosted online fitness sessions both within the club and with our students’ union, and hosted fitness challenges such as a 5K running challenge.

“On top of this, we have taken part in fundraisers for various causes - such as Movember and Sign Language.

“Other than challenges and activities, the main way we have kept members engaged is through social media, through posts on our Facebook page keeping our members informed of changes in Government Restrictions, putting out polls to see as a club what activities people would enjoy during and post-lockdown, or posting regularly on our Instagram to keep everyone keen and excited for practises and socialising to return.”

Despite their herculean efforts during the past 12 months to keep their members engaged, the club has not been untouched by the global pandemic and it has affected their ability to stick to their usual annual routine.

“As a university club, a lot of the focus is on socialising and getting to know new people, alongside learning/playing lacrosse.

“We have sadly not been able to do much of what we usually would in a regular season, such as play league fixtures, in-person socials, training sessions etc.

“Despite this, we have certainly made the most of a bad situation and when we were allowed to run training and play some matches for a period back in September and October, we had a very successful pre-season, and were very successful at recruiting new members. In fact, we managed to recruit more members last September than at the start of any other previous academic year!”

Speaking about Southampton’s plans for the return to play, Olivia says they’ve been planning ever since the Prime Minister first announced the loose roadmap for easing restrictions last month.

“We have been planning ahead to re-engage our members after lockdown, from organising fun training sessions, socials under covid-restrictions, and a lot of attention given to our new members to keep them keen despite not having the usual experience.

“We have been allowed to plan training sessions over the Easter holidays as a chilled and fun way to get everyone back after a few months, with full training sessions happening after the holidays.

“We have been constantly updating our members through Facebook and Instagram as to what we can and can’t do, and giving lots of timelines, so luckily our members have had time to prepare and are very excited by a return to lacrosse.

“Our students’ union has also been very helpful, promoting our club on Instagram to help us recruit new members and encourage those already part of the club to come back.'“

And when asked about how Southampton University Ladies Lacrosse Club will help to keep those members engaged who aren’t able to be in Southampton yet due to restrictions, Olivia was confident the club would have the ability to keep those people interested.

“Wherever possible we will encourage those who can’t currently be in Southampton to join our online socials and events as and when they are held.

“The university have discouraged people returning to campus unless absolutely necessary. However, we always make it clear that anyone, of any playing ability, who is willing to follow the current guidelines is welcome to join Southampton University Ladies Lacrosse Club!
