England star Liv Wimpenny, who will take to the field for Great Britain at The World Games in Chengdu, China in just 10 days’ time, says she’s looking forward to putting all of her practice into competition.
In an interview with British Lacrosse, Wimpenny, who has two World Championship bronze medals with England and has featured at The World Games twice before, said she’s “really excited to play with a new group of players that haven’t competed on the world stage together before”.
Having represented Great Britain at the two previous iterations of The World Games in which lacrosse has been featured in Wroclaw, Poland in 2017 and Birmingham, Alabama, in 2022, Wimpenny, having made her England debut in 2012 at just 16, is now one of the elder stateswomen in the squad, despite only being 29 years old.
“It’s such an exciting group”, she told British Lacrosse’s Instagram channel, “I just can’t wait to see what we can do.”
Wimpenny and her Great Britain team will feature in Group A at The World Games 2025 where they’ll take on reigning champions Canada, hosts China, and a Japan team they are familiar with having just recently returned from a tour of the country that took in test matches against the national side.
“As a squad we went to Japan”, Wimpenny said, “where we played multiple matches together. In terms of other preparations, we've had multiple training sessions throughout the year, working on lots of different tactics, and then I guess personally, I’ve been gymming and training on my own.”
Great Britain begin their The World Games campaign against China on Thursday 7 August at 7:30am (UK). For more information about the competition, click HERE.
