Clean sweep for British Lacrosse at Euro Lax Sixes Cup

British Lacrosse claimed both 2024 Euro Lax Sixes Cups over the weekend after impressive wins over Hamburg Warriors and Germany in the respective men’s and women’s finals.

The British Lacrosse men’s team overcame a resolute Hamburg Warriors side 25-13, with Ben Page-Laycock hitting five on the way to victory, while the British Lacrosse women’s team defeated Germany convincingly 22-5, with Emma Savage and Liv Wimpenny both scoring five a-piece.

The results mean that both Euro Lax Sixes Cups have been held by a representative from Great Britain since its inception in 2022.

In this year’s edition, both British Lacrosse teams were unstoppable once again, remaining unbeaten across their 10 matches.

The men’s team beat Turkey and Luxembourg in their round robin matches by an aggregate score of 52-14 with Page-Laycock scoring an incredible 12 goals across the two games.

This was followed up by a 24-11 victory over Netherlands Orange in the quarter-final with Tom Roper taking his tally for the competition to 13 as he hit five goals.

A second win over Turkey came next in the semi-final, this time the score finishing 24-11, before a final match-up against Hamburg Warriors from Germany.

Once again, British Lacrosse proved too strong for their opposition and, with the help of five goals from Page-Laycock once again, they lifted the Euro Lax Sixes Cup for the third consecutive year after a 25-13 win.

Over in the women’s competition, British Lacrosse blew away Switzerland 27-0 in their first round robin game with six goals from Lottie Robertson and five from Wimpenny.

Their second round robin victory was just as dominating as they defeated Spain 25-4 to set up a quarter-final match with Global United.

Another clean sheet followed and a 24-0 win that saw Torz Anderson hit five and Claire Faram and Sophy Coombes-Roberts score four each.

The momentum was firmly with British Lacrosse at this point in the competition and a 25-6 victory against Ireland in the semi-final meant all that stood between them and Euro Lax Sixes Cup glory once again was Germany.

In the end, the final proved to be a formality and a huge 22-5 win meant the women’s trophy headed back to Great Britain for the second time.

Pools announced for 2024 Box Championships in New York

England men has been drawn in Pool A against Canada, the Haudenosaunee, and the United States and England women will play the Haudenosaunee, Hong Kong, Netherlands, and the United States also in Pool A in the respective 2024 World Lacrosse Men’s and Women’s Box Championships due to take place later this year.

The news comes after World Lacrosse today announced the pools for the 2024 Box Championships, set for 20-29 September in Utica, New York, USA with 28 teams in the men’s box championship and 10 teams in the first-ever women’s box championship.

The men’s field of 28 teams is split into seven pools of four and the women’s field is split into two groups of five teams.

The men’s field is the largest in the competition’s history, with 11 teams competing for the first time and three Continental Federations represented.

All top 10 finishers from the 2019 Men’s Box Championship return to this year’s event, including England who finished fourth in that competition.

The top four seeded men’s teams make up Pool A: Canada, the Haudenosaunee, the United States and England.

The remaining teams were split into pools B-G using snake seeding, with adjustments made for continental balance.

For seeding, final rankings from the last men’s box championship and finishes in past field world championships for teams making their first appearance were considered; for CF balance, teams from at least two continental federations were placed in each pool.

In the women’s competition, the teams were snake seeded based on final rankings from the 2022 Women’s Championship, also with adjustment for continental balance.

The schedule will be released later this week, as well as details on the format of the competition and progression into the playoffs.

Club Focus | Border City Lacrosse Club

Throughout the 2023/24 domestic season, we’ll be highlighting a different club each month to showcase the great work being done in the community by clubs around the country and our club for February is Border City Lacrosse Club.

Border City was founded in Carlisle, Cumbria in April 2019 after a call went out on Facebook for men in the region looking to get involved in lacrosse.

The original founding group included current Club Captain, Joel Castley, his brother Jack Castley, Laurie Clark, Dan Clements, Ross Irving, Mike Orme, Josh Soper and later Morgan Tebb-Roger (when home from college in the United States).

The club started small but this eight-strong group of lacrosse enthusiasts met for a series of throw-arounds on the Harraby 3G pitches in Carlisle, with some of their early training sessions seeing just three players attend.

With huge perseverance, however, the numbers of regular attendees steadily grew as time went on and the club played its first game in June 2019 against Newcastle Knights before joining the Scottish domestic league the following September.

Whilst Carlisle isn’t a traditional hotbed of lacrosse when compared to other areas of the north of England, many people in the local area have had experience of playing lacrosse through PE at school and have a basic knowledge of the game.

Indeed, there was quite a number of ex-players from the north of England, southern, and Scottish leagues, as well as former university and college players in the area who had no means to continue being involved in the game without constant travel.

This all changed in 2019, of course, when Border City was founded with the original aim to get people in Carlisle and the surrounding areas involved in the game, enjoying some training and a bit of a throw-around.

As often happens with this sort of thing, the idea snowballed fairly quickly and the desire to play competitive lacrosse was still strong in a lot of the players who joined the club.

As time has gone by, Border City have relied less and less on that original batch of ex-players and have successfully started developing the game in Carlisle with a large proportion of the current team having never played lacrosse before joining the club.

The club tends to pick up a couple of ex-university players and some new starters every season and currently the numbers are fairly reasonable for a club of their size.

They have had amazing support from The Lacrosse Foundation since they were founded, initially aiding them with equipment purchases, but later funding extensive coaching in schools which has brought a whole group of young players into the game and now the club.

They recently had their first homegrown player, who was introduced to lacrosse at the club, make appearances for the senior men’s team, join the England Lacrosse Aspire Programme, and into the first team at Durham University.

Border City currently has one men’s league team, the Border Reivers, which is made up of Border City and Newcastle Knights players.

After just being relegated from the Championship, they are adjusting to life in the first division and are holding their own against most teams.

The men’s team is coached by the experienced Graham Bland who for many years played for clubs like Hampstead, Buckhurst Hill and latterly Stockport and is well known in the game.

A fledging women’s team currently trains once a week and combines with Newcastle ladies to play regular friendlies; the number of players in this team has grown considerably over the last year and they hope to enter a team into the league as soon as possible.

The women’s team is currently being coached by Vics Law as part of some coaching work she is undertaking for the club in Cumbrian Schools with the assistance of ex-Heaton Mersey player Jo Racle.

A junior boys team has just over 10 players who train once a week with a big conundrum being how to give the young players the experience of regular competition to help maintain their enthusiasm in the sport.

As a club, Border City welcomes all players including absolute beginners and everyone who wants to play for Borders is made to feel at home from day one.

The aim of the club is to establish lacrosse in the region and become wholly sustainable with junior and women’s lacrosse available.

Their number one priority is to make lacrosse, and all the benefits which go with it, accessible to anyone; they particularly believe in inclusivity and also in promoting and protecting the mental health of their members through encouragement and support both on and off the pitch.

Border City operates out of Brampton, Cumbria, training on the astro turf at the local secondary school on a Monday night from 7-8.30pm.

The school currently teaches lacrosse to all year groups so are well kitted out for training sessions with permanent goals and an understanding nature.

They have their own grass pitch a few minutes from their training base at Cotehill Park Sports Ground which they share with Irthing Vale Cricket Club.

They have welcomed Border City with open arms and the two clubs have spent the last few years completely upgrading the pitch and facilities; whilst they aren’t quite at the standard of facilities of some well-established clubs in the league, they have financed and installed a changing room and shower, installed electricity and started renovating the clubhouse with big plans for providing food and drink in the coming years.

During the second weekend in September, Border City hosts an annual eights tournament and 2024 will mark the fourth edition of the event.

It is an opportunity for teams to engage in a really friendly tournament focused mostly on pre-season fun and game time. They hope to extend the competition to include women’s teams this year, having only been run for men’s rules to date.

Border City as a club is trying to create a strong lacrosse culture based on support and encouragement across all age brackets. It is their ambition that lacrosse will become widespread in Cumbria and the Borders with youngsters from all walks of life having the opportunity to play such an amazing sport.

Border City can be contacted by email on [email protected] or find them on Facebook HERE and Instagram HERE.

England Lacrosse is excited to announce the 29-player England women’s box squad heading to Prague, Czechia, for the 2024 ShE-Box tournament.

Taking place from 19-22 April, the 2024 event will mark England’s debut at the competition after Southern Box Lacrosse’s Ravens competed for and won last year’s trophy.

The competition will be the first chance for Head Coach Rob Clark, alongside his Assistant Coaches Scott Joyner, Don McGraw, and Millie Geddes, to assess his England squad in a competitive setting as he continues to prepare for September’s 2024 World Lacrosse Box Championships in Utica, NY, USA.

27 of the 29-player squad heading to Prague were named in the 44-player England World Championship training squad announced in November last year, with Davina Emetulu and Tabitha Podger joining the squad for the ShE-Box tournament.

British Lacrosse announces Euro Lax Sixes Cup squads

British Lacrosse has announced its men’s and women’s squads to compete at this year’s Euro Lax Sixes Cup, taking place from 23-25 February in Vila Real De Santo Antonio, Algarve, Portugal.

The men’s team Head Coach, Tom Wenham, has selected 12 players to make the journey to Portugal, including England’s field 2023 World Championship stars Hal Dwobeng, Drew Bickerton, and Cameron Major.

The squad also includes three of England box’s regular starters and 2022 European Championship winners in Ben Page-Laycock, Matt Tatton, and Ming Trinh.

Indeed, all but one of the 12-player squad has played in The Fly Sixes Lacrosse league with nine of them returning to the competition in 2024.

Women’s Head Coach, Phil Collier, has selected a 14-player squad, with a two-player reserve list, for the Euro Lax Sixes Cup that includes nine players in the current 2024 England senior training squad and four 2022 World Championship bronze medallists.

Every single player in the 16-player wider squad has made an appearance in The Fly Sixes Lacrosse league with 15 of them set to represent one of the four teams once again later this year.

The Euro Lax Sixes Cup is a competition that has yielded some success for British Lacrosse teams over the years with both men’s and women’s teams lifting the inaugural trophies in 2022.

2023 saw British Lacrosse men bring the title home once again after a 25-12 victory over Switzerland in the final.

That year, British Lacrosse women opted not to submit a team with two England teams taking their place instead; England red eventually won the competition after going unbeaten throughout the tournament.

13 teams have been confirmed as taking part in the Euro Lax Sixes Cup this year, including hosts Portugal, Spain, Belgium, Germany, Turkey, Ireland, Luxembourg, Denmark, Switzerland, Scotland, Netherlands, Great Britain, and, for the first time, Brazil.

Sam Patterson appointed new England Men's Head Coach

England Lacrosse is delighted to announce the appointment of Sam Patterson as Head Coach of the England Men’s Performance Squad.

Patterson takes charge off the back of a successful coaching career across club, university, and international level, following an equally distinguished playing stint spanning more than 20 years.

Since 2016, he has been Head of Lacrosse at Nottingham Trent University, overseeing the transformation of the institution’s lacrosse programme to firmly establish NTU as one of the top lacrosse programmes in the country.

Patterson has taken the NTU Men’s performance squad to the BUCS National Championship final five years in a row, claiming the title in both 2018 and 2023.

He has also had success with the Women’s performance squad, leading the programme to the top tier of BUCS lacrosse, as well as picking up the BUCS National Trophy in 2022.

In addition to team success on the field, through his time at NTU he has also overseen the individual player development of a number of England internationals and will now pick up those relationships again in his new role.

As a player, Patterson is one of the most decorated players in the history of England Lacrosse.

He represented England in a remarkable four Senior World Championships from 2006-2018, is a three-time European Championship gold medal winner and has won numerous trophies playing for club side Stockport.

Following his international playing career, Patterson soon also transitioned into international level coaching, serving as an Assistant Coach to the Men’s Performance Squad from 2019-2022, building on the experience gained coaching throughout the England Academy system.

Patterson’s first outing following the appointment is set to be at April’s Home Internationals tournament in Cardiff, before looking ahead to the upcoming 2025 European Championships.

Derek Morgan, England Lacrosse National Performance Manager, said: “Sam is a highly respected figure within the English game and following his international playing career, has now proven himself to be one of the most talented coaches around.

“He has significant major tournament experience as a player and has worked as a coach on both our Talent Pathway system and as a senior Assistant Coach to develop his top-level coaching knowledge.

“Additionally, his impressive track record at NTU has demonstrated his ability to create a cohesive, structured programme that has delivered positive results on a consistent basis.

“The Men’s Performance programme has a strong core of young, talented athletes and we see Sam as someone who will be able to nurture that talent, while also creating a clear vision and identity for the programme moving forward.”

On his appointment, Sam Patterson said: “This is a huge privilege and honour to be given the responsibility to take the England team forward in this exciting time in our sports history.

“This undoubtably will be the biggest challenge in my coaching career to date, but one I am laser focused on ensuring will be a successful period for our national team.

“We are blessed with a fantastic group of players, and I am really excited to start working with them. This is very much a busy time for our players with more lacrosse commitments than ever before, so I will be working in close collaboration with all our national team formats, junior teams, and the academy.

“I also want to convey to the players my first priority is to create the best possible environment for them, give them clarity and buy-in of the process we are about to embark on together, and build a highly competitive team we can all be proud of and get behind ahead of the European Championships, and onward to the World Championships in Japan in 2027.”

England Women announce 2024 Performance and Development squads

England Lacrosse is pleased to announce the selection of the 2024 England Women’s Performance and Development squads.

The 36-player performance squad will comprise the players vying for selection for the 2024 Women’s European Championship taking place in Braga, Portugal in July, with the development squad continuing to assist players in bridging the gap between our junior and senior programmes.

The 2024 Euros will be Head Coach Michael Molster’s first major tournament in charge after helping the team win gold at the last edition back in 2019 in Israel as Assistant Coach, followed by 2022’s bronze medal at the World Championship.

The development programme will continue to be led by Sally Keogh, appointed Head Coach of the formerly named England Under 23s , back in 2021.

The squads will meet this forthcoming weekend for their February squad sessions with the next competitive international action scheduled for April’s Home Internationals in Cardiff where England will once again be defending champions.

England U20 women take on top level opposition ahead of World Championship

For the past week, the England women’s under-20 World Championship training squad has been on tour in Florida, USA taking on top level opposition as they continue to prepare for the 2024 World Lacrosse Women’s U20 Championship in August.

The 29-player training squad travelled across the pond with four coaches, including Head Coach Vic Alexander, and took part in a programme of training sessions and scrimmages against American college teams.

The tour allowed the players to experience a performance environment similar to the one they’ll find at the World Championship in Hong Kong, China.

It also exposed the players to high-level situations against top quality NCAA athletes who are on the verge of their 2024 college seasons, allowing our England coaches to see how the players cope under pressure and in different match situations.

England played five scrimmages in total against the University of South Florida (x2), Florida Southern College, Florida Institute of Technology, and the University of Tampa, with players rotated throughout matches in line with the wider training schedule.

Despite five losses, including a narrow 14-12 defeat to Florida Institute of Technology, the players and coaches have learned a lot and come away with some invaluable experiences ahead of the World Championship.

The players have been able to build stronger bonds across the squad both on and off the field and the team has made some important connections with lacrosse players from the United States.

Following the tour to Florida, the squad will continue to work hard in training sessions with the next big milestone being the annual Home Internationals Series in early April before the final 22-player World Championship squad is announced shortly after.

England teams discover E-Box opponents

The England men’s box World Championship training squad will take on Finland, Czech Republic, and a touring Canadian team at the 2024 E-Box event in Prague, Czechia in April.

At the parallel She-Box event, the England women’s World Championship training squad, making their debut appearance at 2024 competition, will play matches against Hong Kong, Finland, Netherlands, Germany, and a Women’s Global Network team.

Taking place from 19-22 April, the tournaments mark a significant test for both England teams as they continue their preparations ahead of the first ever joint men’s and women’s World Lacrosse Box Championship in Utica, NY, USA in September.

For the men, their game against Finland will be the first competitive match-up with the Nordic team since the 2019 World Championship play-in match that ended with a 15-6 England win.

Their following game against the hosts, Czechia, sees England come up against their 2022 European Championship semi-final opponents; in that match, England claimed a narrow 13-12 victory on their way to European Championship glory.

Over in the women’s competition, the 2024 She-Box event marks England’s first ever competitive international games with four of England’s opponents also being involved in the World Championship.

It will be the first chance for Head Coach, Rob Clark, to see his players in competitive action before he slim-lines his squad ahead of the World Championship in September.

At last year’s E-Box event, England men won two out of their three games defeating Switzerland 14-5 and Norway 24-3 either side of a 13-8 loss to fellow European Championship finalists Germany.

Southern Box Lacrosse’s Ravens represented England at last year’s She-Box event bringing home the trophy after winning three of their four games.

England women's U20s embark on Florida tour

The England women’s under-20 World Championship training squad has arrived in Florida, USA for an overseas tour as they ramp up their preparations ahead of this summer’s 2024 World Lacrosse Women’s U20 Championship.

During the six day tour, the England women’s under-20 training squad will play five scrimmages against four American college teams.

They’ll take part in training sessions, strength & conditioning sessions, and experience a general performance atmosphere similar to the one they will face in Hong Kong, China during the World Championship.

It’s not all work, however, as the tour presents a fantastic opportunity for the players to get to know one another better, make connections with players from the United States, and see a different part of the world.

The 2024 World Lacrosse Women’s U20 Championship takes place from 15 to 25 August in Hong Kong, China and 20 teams including England are confirmed to be taking part.

England are looking to back up their 2022 European Championship win with a strong performance against some of the best young lacrosse talent in the world.
