Coach Howells fundraising for new prosthetic leg

England Lacrosse Aspire Programme coach and community lacrosse champion Ben Howells, with the help of The Lacrosse Foundation, is fundraising for a new prosthetic leg to allow him to continue coaching and growing the game.

As Brooklands Lacrosse Club’s Development Officer, the founder of a grassroots coaching organisation, and a regular Aspire Programme coach, Howells coaches seven days a week and introduces hundreds of young people to the sport and creates paid coaching opportunities for those already within the game each year.

But all this work is now at risk as Howells’ current prosthetic leg is nearing the end of its lifespan and has begun to limit his movement, balance, and ability to demonstrate skills to his students.

Without a replacement, he estimates he may only have one more year of coaching at the level his role demands.

A new prosthetic leg, with advanced ankle-joint technology, would give Howells far greater mobility and extend his coaching career by at least three years; he’d be able to coach more hours of lacrosse each day, demonstrate movement and technique with full mobility, and continue mentoring coaches and growing grassroots lacrosse.

After picking up and falling in love with lacrosse aged 10, Howells has been an important part of the community ever since, progressing to international level with both England and Wales, before transitioning into coaching and sharing his experience and knowledge with the next generation of lacrosse enthusiasts.

Simply put, any donations received will go straight back into the sport as Howells will continue coaching for years to come, giving more young people access to the sport, creating new coaching jobs, and strengthening the future of lacrosse in the UK.

The Lacrosse Foundation said:

“Ben gives his time, energy and expertise to every child, team and program he supports. He has never asked for anything in return — and now the lacrosse community has an opportunity to give back.”
