Fundamentals lacrosse courses benefiting coaches across the country
Aspiring lacrosse coaches are proving they're willing to go the extra mile to gain their coaching qualification.
A recent Fundamentals course in Hertfordshire welcomed a candidate who travelled from Durham – a three-hour journey. That effort was surpassed at a course in Wiltshire, where one participant made the trip from Jersey. Hopefully, we'll see even more lacrosse developing in the Channel Islands in the years ahead.
The Fundamentals course is designed for anyone who wants to introduce new players to the sport, equipping them with the knowledge and confidence to teach the basics while creating a fun, positive first experience that inspires people to keep playing.
The course is split into two parts:
Online learning – covering good coaching practice, session planning, coaching techniques and more.
Practical workshop – focusing on the four core skills, fun games to reinforce learning, and the basics of dodging, safe checking and changing hands.
The latest course at St George's School, Harpenden, welcomed 17 participants, including players (some on the Aspire pathway), teachers and parent volunteers, ranging in age from 15 to 55.
Everyone came away having learned something new and embraced the practical activities with enthusiasm despite the 31°C heat. From playing 'Stuck in the Mud' to 'Chase the Bacon', there was plenty of energy, along with regular water breaks and generous amounts of sun cream.
England Lacrosse delivers Fundamentals courses across every region throughout the year. Clubs, schools and universities can also host a course, with group discounts of up to 20% available.
"It's fantastic to see people travelling from across the country, even from the Channel Islands, to take part in our Fundamentals course. Whether you're a player, teacher, parent or volunteer, these courses give people the confidence and practical skills to introduce others to lacrosse in a fun, safe, and engaging way. Every new coach helps create more opportunities for people to discover and enjoy our sport."
