Women record second victory with comfortable Scotland win

England picked up their second win of the 2022 World Lacrosse Women’s World Championship with a comfortable 18-7 victory against Scotland.

Olivia Hompe led the way with five goals, while Megan Whittle and Torz Anderson both registered hat-tricks in a game that was curtailed due to bad weather.

The first quarter was an open, back-and-forth contest with both teams trading goals; Whittle and Anderson both scoring two, but Scotland getting three of their own as England went into the ¼ time 4-3 up.

Despite winning seven of the first eight draws, Liv Wimpenny totalling seven for the game, the dominance wasn’t reflected in the score line until the second quarter when England were able to begin to pull away.

A 6-2 quarter which included a hat-trick for Hompe and a first tournament goal for Ruby Smith established England a healthy 10-5 advantage at the half.

And England were in no mood to let up after the break, resuming their scoring dominance as Whittle and Anderson completed their hat-tricks, Hompe added another two, and by the time Georgie Southorn and Claire Faram had got their names on the scoresheet, it was 16-6 and England were now running away with things.

England’s attacking quartet were in full flow by this point and all finished with at least four points in the game, showing the variety of attacking options England had at their disposal.

England did threaten to further extend their lead in Q4 as Wimpenny and Emily Gray took the number of different England scorers to eight, but it was weather that would actually have the last word on the contest.

Shortly after Scotland added their seventh, the game was brought to halt due to the thunderstorms in the area and still with over nine minutes to play the game was called, and England confirmed their unbeaten record at the competition so far.

England will now play Canada on Sunday 3 July at 8pm EST/1am UK Time with Canada 1-1 so far after losing to USA before beating Australia.
