12 box beginners enjoy open men’s session
12 box lacrosse beginners attended England Box Lacrosse’s open men’s session at the Oxford Academy 3G Dome on Sunday.
The 12 newcomers were joined by six more experienced box players with the session led by England Assistant Coach Rob Ingham Clark and England General Manager Rob Gooch.
Covering the basics of the box format and how it differs from field and sixes lacrosse, the session saw Ingham Clark and Gooch introduce principles of the two-man game and how it is an effective offensive strategy alongside lots of shots on goal, including scoring one v one against a goalie in a breakaway situation.
To conclude, the 18 players enjoyed some scrimmage periods to put what they’d learned earlier in the session into practice.
“I was really happy to see new faces playing box lacrosse for the first time,” Gooch said.
“Everyone went away smiling, exhausted, and asking when they can do it all again. We will endeavour to run another open session early in 2027, but before then we have the Winter Box League, starting on 20 December out of Oxford with the player draft application opening this Friday 23 October.”
