First weeks, next steps: Surrey hits the target at Freshers’ Fair

University of Surrey Lacrosse Club's Fresher's Fair table

The University of Surrey Lacrosse Club brought a competitive twist to its Freshers’ Fair this year, inviting students to pick up a stick and test their shooting skills for the chance to win a hamper of sweets.

First Weeks, Next Steps follows England Lacrosse’s Student Ambassadors and their university clubs as they welcome new players, sharing how students discover lacrosse, give it a go, and find their place in the sport.

At Surrey, that introduction began with a target inside a lacrosse goal. Different sections were worth different points, with the highest-scoring student taking home the prize.

The challenge gave prospective players a chance to try an element of the sport while meeting the students behind the club.

Surrey’s England Lacrosse Student Ambassador Lois Taylor shared how the activity encouraged students to visit the stall and sparked conversations with club members.

For many new students, trying a shot at the fair was a starting point for finding out more. The next step was knowing how to join a session and what to expect.

As the term progresses, we look forward to hearing how Surrey’s newcomers are settling into the club.
