Lacrosse to feature at The World Games 2029

Men’s and women’s sixes lacrosse will feature at The World Games 2029 set to take place in Karlsruhe, Germany from 19-29 July 2029, the International World Games Association has confirmed.

The 2029 competition will come just a year after lacrosse makes its triumphant return to the Olympic stage at LA28 and marks the fourth time the sport has featured at The World Games after making its debut at the 2017 edition in Wrocław, Poland.

At that 2017 competition, The World Games held a women’s-only field lacrosse event in which Great Britain finished fourth after a narrow 10-8 defeat to Australia in the bronze medal match.

Five years later in Birmingham, Alabama, the code was switched to sixes lacrosse and a men’s competition was included as an invitational event for the first and only time to date, with GB losing to Japan 19-18 in overtime to finish fourth while the women suffered a repeat of 2017, losing 13-7 to Australia to also end in fourth spot.

The men’s competition was dropped for the 2025 edition in Chengdu, China with GB’s women’s team claiming a fifth place finish.

Upon the announcement World Lacrosse CEO Jim Scherr said:

“The confirmation of both men’s and women’s sixes for The World Games 2029 is a great step forward for our sport.

Karlsruhe will give our athletes another world-class multi-sport stage, and with sixes set for the LA28 Olympics, the opportunity for our member nations to compete at this level is more valuable than ever.

We are grateful to the International World Games Association and the Karlsruhe Organizing Committee for their support of lacrosse, and we look forward to showcasing the very best of our sport in Germany.”

Full competition format, team allocations, and qualification pathway details will be announced in due course.

The World Games are an international multi-sport event comprising sports and sporting disciplines that are not contested in the Olympic Games.

Recently, editions of the event have included between 25 and 34 sports with around 3,500 participants from over 100 countries taking part.
